A $29 concealer that's sold enough to cross $1 billion in lifetime sales — with Tarte claiming one tube sells every 12 seconds, and an annual "International Shape Tape Day" to prove it.
Shape Tape is Tarte's full-coverage, vegan concealer, sold in dozens of shades and consistently ranked among the best-selling concealers in the US. It's one of the clearest examples of a single SKU — not a whole product line — becoming a genuine billion-dollar franchise on its own.
Shape Tape launched with just 10 shades, skewed light, and drew real criticism for excluding a large range of skin tones — a common early failure point for beauty brands from this era. Tarte has since expanded the line to 48 shades and made shade range a much more central part of its marketing.
The brand has leaned hard into the product's cult status: it named January 12th "International Shape Tape Day" — a reference to the "one sold every 12 seconds" claim — and has both a full-size and travel-size version alongside a newer stick format for on-the-go touch-ups.
