The best-selling board game in history — built on an idea a woman named Elizabeth Magie patented in 1904 to warn people about the dangers of monopolies, not celebrate them.
Monopoly is the property-trading board game where players buy, rent, and bankrupt each other around a board of streets and railroads. It's sold over 275 million copies since 1935, and its origin story is genuinely more interesting than the game itself — the version most people know was built on an earlier game designed to make the exact opposite political point.
A game invented to warn against the thing it's now named after
The real originator was Elizabeth Magie, a progressive activist and follower of economist Henry George, who patented "The Landlord's Game" in 1904 specifically to illustrate the harm of concentrated land ownership and monopolistic rent-seeking — the opposite message of the game as it's played and marketed today.
Charles Darrow, an unemployed heating contractor, later learned a homemade variant of Magie's game from friends, refined it, and sold it to Parker Brothers as his own creation in 1935. Parker Brothers had initially rejected it as too complicated and too long — then it wildly outperformed every expectation, selling 1.8 million copies at $2 each in its first full year.
Still growing, nearly a century later
Monopoly now accounts for close to a third of all global mass-market board game sales, largely because Hasbro (which acquired Parker Brothers in 1991) has leaned hard into localized and licensed editions — the game is produced in 37 languages across 103 countries.
It's kept finding new life in new formats: the 2023 mobile game Monopoly GO! generated $1.3 billion in revenue in its first year alone, introducing the 90-year-old board game to a mobile-gaming audience that had likely never touched the physical version.
